Custom mugs created for 4545 Architecture and Design
My husband requested mugs for his architecture firm, 4545 Architecture and Design. I knew I wanted to incorporate their logo, and that it wanted to be a heavier, more “masculine” style of mug with a larger handle.
This process was a great learning experience in developing a multi-part project and playing with texture, design, and glazing/staining techniques.
First, I sketched out some ideas and ideal dimensions.
From there, I threw three mug bodies and cut handles out of a slab to get the angular look I had in mind.
For the logo, I wanted to play with textures by keeping an area around the logo unglazed.
I traced the logo onto some paper and then transferred the reverse to a slab using a pin tool to outline the edges.
I then carved out the negative space around the logo to make a stamp.
Once the stamp was bisqued, I used it to create plaques with the logo indented in them to place onto the mugs.
I painted iron oxide in the logo indentation, then painted the plaques with wax, and then dipped the mugs in temmoku with satin white inside and around the lip.
